Recently one of the heavily advertised liposuction procedures has ceased to exist. So why does a surgical procedure that many people underwent suddenly stop? Well, the national company that owned that “proprietary” procedure went out of business. The bigger question is who is responsible for the patients who underwent the procedure and either have not finished all the planned surgery or worse, who will take care of any long term problems?
When patients opt for “trade-named” surgeries they are purchasing the procedure from a company as well as receiving it from a physician. Companies do this to make money. Physicians, of course, do make a living but altruism and caring for patients are part of our Hippocratic Oath.
Fads, trade-names, and heavily marketed procedures usually are not time-tested. Increased complications, results that do not last long and underachieving results are why most board-certified plastic surgeons use traditional approaches to facelifts, liposuction, and other cosmetic procedures.
(Did You Know? I use a two layer facelift for most patients for a natural look and it has been used by most plastic surgeons for almost thirty years.)
