Have you ever started eating and noticed that you have lost the sense of fullness that usually leads you to stop eating? Some people eat breads, sweet appetizers or a glass of wine at the beginning of dinner and find themselves overeating at that meal. Louis J. Aronne is the director of the weight loss program at New York Presbyterian Hospital and has written the book, “The Skinny”. (Did You Know? Our website has gotten favorable reviews from the internet community. Check it out; we think you will be impressed. Mike Manford is our IT/web designer and can be reached through the link at the bottom of the home page.) Dr. Aronne feels that non-complex carbohydrates stimulate insulin which drives blood sugars down and stimulates hunger. Insulin also interferes with leptin which is secreted by fat cells to cause the sensation of fullness. Dr. Aronne says that eating foods high in protein, vegetables, fiber, and water have the opposite effect. So the next time you are headed out to dinner or a party, try some fresh vegetables, a bowl of cereal, or a container of yogurt to minimize not only overeating but also eating the wrong things.
